About the Letterbox Club

The Letterbox Club is a programme managed by Booktrust, in partnership with the University of Leicester, which aims to provide enjoyable educational support for looked-after children aged 7-13.

Letterbox Club is available on a subscription basis and each child enrolled by participating local authorities is sent a parcel of books, maths activities, stationery and other materials once every month for six months, from May to October.

Each child participating in the programme receives the brightly coloured parcels directly addressed to them at home. The Letterbox Club is also suitable for other children who would benefit, such as those placed for adoption or for post-adoption support.

Letterbox Club research

Research shows that children in care underachieve in education, but evaluation from pilots of the Letterbox Club has shown that providing parcels designed to encourage fun learning has had a demonstrable impact. Many children began to make more significant changes in their standardised score in reading.

Letterbox Club reach

• Booktrust received support from the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) to extend the programme to 1,600 children in 2007-08
• In 2009, the Letterbox Club opened to every local authority in the United Kingdom, with over 4,500 children enrolled across the 129 authorities
• 2010 saw further expansion with 4,545 children and 140 local authorities involved
• In 2011, there were again more than 100 local authorities involved with 4,500 children enrolled.
• 2012 saw a record level of sign up, with 120 local authorities and over 5,000 children enrolled.

Letterbox Club parcels

Each Letterbox Club parcel arrives in a brightly coloured package addressed to the child. Each child receives a letter and a range of books that have been carefully selected by the panel at Booktrust for the children in the programme. They also receive number games and a range of stationery items. Over the six-month period the parcels will also include other items such as a library joining card or information about how to join a library, name plates, bookmarks and letters from a selection of children’s authors. We are developing a varied list of possible materials to be added. After being a member of the Letterbox Club for six months the child will have built up their own small library of books, a collection of number games and a variety of stationery items.

A huge honour to have been given the task to redesign and custom develop Mrs Barbara Taylor Bradfords USA and UK websites. These were hugely custom build websites, developed to showcase all Mrs Bradfords many books and news articles and full history, to be easily and clearly accessible by her many readers.

The new sites needed to be clean and clear, yet bring about some fresh and modern design into the way we showcased all the books and archives. Her readers needed to be able to easily find everything they wanted to know about Mrs Bradford and yet still feel her personal touch in her fresh online presence.

ABOUT STORM IN A TEACUP

Storm In A Teacup is a little London company comprising  just one person: me!

Storm in a Teacup is a one-girl show, it’s just me; from the designing and making to the gift wrapping, shipping and customer contact and I love it all! Hopefully that shows and when you receive your chosen gems or drop me a message you can tell it’s had the personal touch.

It started as a hobby when I chose to hand-make unique gifts for my friends’ birthdays, both male and female. Many birthdays later the result was a diverse range of jewellery and accessories to match their equally diverse tastes and before I knew it I was taking my designs to craft events under the name Storm in a Teacup. Spending so much time and love tinkering away at it I decided to take a big leap in 2009 and leave my 9 year career in film and TV to pursue my jewellery design full time (hurray!)

Rather than leaning toward just one style my gems vary from whimsical and delicate to bold and contemporary. And, importantly, at affordable prices! So you’ll find a refreshing alternative to the high street and know your chosen gem is a little something different.

I also like to be environmentally aware in all aspects of running Storm in a Teacup and am committed to following responsible practices to minimise my impact on the environment; from using sustainable, recycled stationary and materials wherever possible and recycling all packaging to creating an energy efficient work place!

Why not come and see my treasures for yourself at my next event? Check my Events page for up-to-date details of awesome FREE events where I’ll be showcasing my goodies alongside other crafty people and where you can browse, try on, feast on cake and good music and generally have fun times!

Do get in touch if you have any questions, special requests or would just like to know more. Or even if you just want to tell me what you like or what you’d like to see more off – it’s good to talk! All contact details can be found on my Contact page.

next-gen tools for better diabetes management.

Diabetes isn’t always a medical or emergency issue. Most of the time it’s a lifestyle thing. So you need better lifestyle tools to avoid low blood sugars and get on with the rest of your life.

At mumoActive we want you to engineer your blood sugars by answering these two questions: What did I do last? What am I doing next?

See when you last ate, tested or gave insulin and make a decision about how long your insulin will be active for. Then you can forget about your blood sugars until the next time you need to act.

Go track your blood sugars. It’s worth it for you.

HOW MUMOACTIVE WORKS

mumoActive is not a diary.

It is a tool to avoid hypos and learn about the rhythms of your body.
What did you do last? What are you doing next? Use mumoActive to have answers to those questions so you can get on with whatever else you would rather be doing.
The app has three floors. The top floor has a sync button and login/logout details.

The middle floor has our data input where you scroll the wheel and tap the number to enter your blood sugar. Swipe left and right to add carbohydrate and insulin readings.

The bottom level has your charts. You can see three days blood sugar results at a glance, a pie chart with results stats and a carb/insulin screen.
